Becoming Us
In development · First launch in India and the United States

A relationship application for two people at a new beginning, or seeking to renew what has broken apart. It helps each person understand themselves first, and then the other.

The problem it solves

Two people deciding whether to build a life together need to know a great deal about themselves and each other: what they need, what they expect, what they can accept, and where they differ on things like family, money, work, and daily life. Most people have never worked through these questions in an organised way, and many do not realise something matters to them until it has gone unsaid.

The same applies to two people who have broken apart and want to renew the relationship. To try again, each person has to understand what went wrong for them, what they need now, and what they are able to offer. That is hard to see clearly from inside the situation.

In both cases, the conversations that follow depend on this self-understanding. When people talk before they have worked out their own position, they explain themselves poorly, misunderstand each other, and leave the important subjects untouched.

Who it is for

Partners, premarital couples, parents and children, and other close relationships, at a new beginning or seeking renewal.

Becoming Us is being developed initially for premarital couples: two people deciding whether to build a life together, at a point where clarity matters most and is often hardest to reach.

How it works

Becoming Us works in two parts, and each person decides how far to go.

First, the private conversation. Each person talks privately with our AI, in their own time. It helps them:

  • work out what they are actually trying to communicate
  • recognise what they are carrying into the conversation
  • see where misunderstanding is most likely to arise
  • prepare to say it in a form the other person can receive

This first part is complete in itself. A person can work out their own position, reach the clarity they came for, and stop there.

The second part is a shared space. If both people choose to continue, they talk to each other there, with the AI present. It listens, stays mostly silent, and privately prompts each person when it helps: what to say, what to ask, what to express, what to clarify. Because it has spoken with each person privately, it understands both sides. It never reveals what either person has said.

Conversations, private and shared alike, are encrypted on the person’s device and stored encrypted. No one at Living Fabric Research can read them. The AI reads messages in order to respond: they are processed by AI models whose providers commit to storing nothing and training on nothing, and we choose providers on that commitment. No person, on our side or theirs, reads these conversations.

Where it launches

Becoming Us will launch first in India and the United States, initially for premarital couples. Other relationship contexts and markets may follow as the product develops.

The research behind it

Becoming Us is being developed alongside The Life Cycle of Conflict and applies ideas emerging from that research.

That research treats conflict as a developing process rather than a single difficult event, and it does not assume that communication can resolve every conflict. Some conflicts are caused by misunderstanding, and clarity may resolve them. Others rest on real differences in interests, values, needs, or commitments, and clarity will not remove those. It will still identify what the disagreement is actually about, which is worth having either way.

The standard it is held to

It succeeds when the conversation between two people improves, not when their relationship with the tool deepens.

Status

Becoming Us is in development. If you would like to hear when it opens, or you work with couples and would like to talk before then, we would be glad to hear from you.
