About

Living Fabric Research is shaped by people working across learning, health, behaviour, systems, and human development.

Why we exist

Two people want to build a life together, or rebuild one, but the understanding and trust it takes keep escaping them.

A couple sitting apart on a sofa, their thoughts tangled between them
A woman sits silent over a table strewn with charts, notes and open books while three people around her talk and gesture

A person facing an important decision has information, options, and people willing to advise them, but still cannot see clearly enough to choose.

A child is capable of learning, but the environment around them rewards compliance, ranking, or speed more than understanding and growth.

A girl at her desk studies a real leaf while the classmates around her fill in worksheets
Two people with a lamp stand among burning refuse at a vast landfill, black smoke rising behind them

A city and its people were never taught to see any value in what they throw away, so it is buried and burned, and the cycle repeats.

What they share

These problems look very different. One appears between two people. Another inside a person trying to choose. Another in the environment in which someone develops. Another across a system used by thousands or millions.

But underneath them is a common question
Are the conditions around people helping them do what they are capable of doing?

Often, they are not.

Where it goes wrong

A relationship may make understanding harder. A decision environment may amplify fear rather than clarity. A school, workplace, or system may reward behaviour that weakens judgment or agency. A public system may depend on people acting well while giving them little reason or ability to do so.

Living Fabric Research exists to study these conditions and design better ones, because many human problems are also design problems.

One principle that guides our work
“What a person is capable of, they should be able to do.”
